Supplement Regimen for Living with MS

As we age, our bodies may require additional support from supplements to maintain optimal health. While our ancestors relied on whole, nutrient-dense foods, today’s food supply is often depleted due to soil degradation, food processing, and exposure to pesticides and herbicides. As a result, getting all the essential nutrients from food alone has become more challenging.

When I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, I discovered I was deficient in several key nutrients essential for proper immune function. My vitamin D level was only 23 ng/mL, while optimal levels are generally considered to be around 50–80 ng/mL. Standard annual check-ups typically don’t include comprehensive nutrient testing, but functional medicine practitioners often prioritize it.

After extensive bloodwork, my functional medicine doctor recommended a personalized supplement regimen, which I’ve followed for the past six years. Many biohackers and functional medicine experts recommend similar foundational supplements to support health and immune function.

To keep things simple, I categorize my supplements into daytime and nighttime routines. This system helps prevent overwhelm and makes it easier to stay consistent. I take my daytime supplements around 3 p.m. when I need an energy boost, and my nighttime supplements before bed—except for my probiotic, which I take after dinner.

I also created a journal (see below) to help me stay organized—not just with supplements, but also with meals and overall wellness tracking. It really helped me in the first few years to identify which foods were causing flares and how different supplements made me feel.

Additionally, I use pill organizers that I fill up once a month, so I don’t have to spend time on it daily.

Supplements alone aren't a cure and won't eliminate all symptoms overnight, but they can play a crucial role in reducing inflammation and supporting immune balance. For instance, nutrients like vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and curcumin have been associated with anti-inflammatory effects and immune support. Do I take them every single day? Not always—sometimes I forget, and that's okay. Do I bring them with me on vacation? Absolutely!

Also, as we know, supplements can be a significant investment, and I totally understand that they might not be affordable for everyone. That said, not all supplements are created equal—some can actually do more harm than good if they’re not from reputable sources. I personally choose high-quality supplements from trusted companies that prioritize safety and effectiveness. Many of them go through third-party testing by organizations like NSF International or USP to make sure what's on the label is actually in the bottle—and nothing harmful is sneaking in.

It’s also worth saying—you don’t have to take supplements every single day for the rest of your life. It’s totally okay to take breaks and check in with your body. In fact, I often use energy medicine techniques to help figure out what my body really needs. These methods are simple but powerful, and they can help you tune in and make smarter, more intuitive choices for your health. If you're curious about how to do this, feel free to reach out. I'd love to share some amazing tools that could truly transform your life.

Let's dive in...

Daytime Supplements

Vitamin D + K2 (8,000 IU) Vitamin D3 + K2 combined with K2 supports immune function, bone health, and calcium absorption. Vitamin K2 ensures that calcium is directed to the bones rather than soft tissues, reducing the risk of arterial calcification. Interestingly, vitamin D is not just a vitamin; it's also considered a hormone due to its role in regulating various bodily functions. Studies have explored its protective effects during COVID-19, suggesting potential benefits in immune response.

Turmeric “Qunol” (1000 MG) Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory that supports joint health, brain function, and cardiovascular well-being. The active compound, curcumin, is known for its antioxidant properties that help combat oxidative stress.

NAC (1000 MG) N-Acetyl Cysteine is a precursor to glutathione, a master antioxidant that aids in detoxification. It also supports respiratory health and helps reduce inflammation in the body.

Glutathione (500 MG Daily)

Glutathione plays a key role in detoxifying the liver and neutralizing free radicals. It supports immune function and is essential for overall cellular health.

Lysine (1500 MG Daily)

Lysine is an essential amino acid that supports immune function and helps manage viral activity, such as the Epstein-Barr virus. It also promotes collagen production for healthy skin and tissue repair.

Chewable Health Magnesium

Magnesium is vital for muscle relaxation, nerve function, and energy production. A deficiency can lead to fatigue, muscle cramps, and increased stress levels.

Seeking Health Multivitamin

A high-quality multivitamin ensures that my body gets essential nutrients to support energy, immunity, and cellular function. It’s an important foundation for overall well-being.

Methyl B12 (1000 mcg daily)

Methylcobalamin is a bioavailable form of vitamin B12 that supports energy metabolism, nerve function, and red blood cell formation. It’s essential for cognitive function and overall vitality.

Super DHA (500 MG Daily)

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid that supports brain health, cognitive function, and eye health. It is also beneficial for reducing inflammation and supporting cardiovascular wellness.

Omega Genics EPA (1 per day) Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, support heart health, and improve cognitive function. They are essential for maintaining overall cellular integrity.

Nighttime Supplements

Probiotic (After Dinner)

Probiotic 50B containing 50 billion CFUs of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains, supports gut health, digestion, and immune function.

Magnesium Caps

Magnesium is essential for numerous bodily functions, including muscle and nerve function, energy production, and bone health. NOW's Magnesium Caps provide 400 mg of elemental magnesium per capsule, derived from a blend of magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, and magnesium aspartate, to support overall health.

Magnesium Citrate

Magnesium Citrate is a highly absorbable form of magnesium known for its calming effects. Taking 400 mg at night may aid in relaxation and support better sleep quality. Additionally, it can help alleviate constipation by drawing water into the intestines, softening the stool, and promoting regular bowel movements.

5-HTP: A Natural Serotonin Boost

5-HTP is a natural serotonin booster that helped me overcome postpartum struggles and pulled me out of the anxiety stage. I first learned about this supplement in the book The Mood Cure by Julia Ross, M.A., where she recommends it to her patients. Since it's an all-natural supplement derived from an African plant, I felt comfortable giving it a try.

When I mentioned it to my therapist, she told me that her friend always suggests it to patients before they consider taking an addictive prescription drug like Xanax.

I started with the lowest dose (50mg), but according to Dr. Ross, you can take up to 300mg per day. I noticed the effects within 15 minutes of taking it, so I never felt the need to increase my dose. I took it daily for two months, sometimes before bed since it also promotes better sleep. Although I haven't taken it in a while, it's still my go-to supplement when I find myself dealing with a stressful day.

If you have any questions about this (or any of the products I mentioned above), feel free to reach out—I love sharing my experiences, especially if they can help others feel better.
